Michiana Senior Golf

FAQ

From May through September each year, the MSGA organizes 10 events at different courses for our 135 or so members aged 50 and over. The events feature competitive 18-hole stroke play, all handicapped, on Mondays or Wednesdays with an average of 80 to 100 players.  Players may choose their playing partners if they like.

Where Do you Play?

The 10 events are selected from a mix of Michiana private country clubs and premium public courses. The larger population areas of Lake and St. Joseph counties typically host the most events.

The final September event includes a banquet at $160-$180. The cost to play all the events is approximately $1100-$1200. Unfortunately, costs have increased significantly in recent years.

What Does a Typical Event Look Like?

Most events have a shotgun start at 12:00 pm CT. Upon arrival 45 minutes to an hour early, you check in, find your cart, and enjoy lunch. You can hit balls at the range and use the putting green to warm up. After pre-event announcements, you head to your tee and begin play.  Most rounds are played in 4½ hours or less.  For 2026, the Pottawattomie CC event on June 1st will start at 10:00 am (CT) with a box lunch served on the course.

Are All Skill Levels Welcome?

Yes, there are three sets of tees at distances of approximately 6100, 5600, and 5100 yards. Two flights are associated with each tee, for six total flights.  The MSGA encourages players to play the tee where they can have the most fun and maintain a good pace of play.   Players on different tees may play together.

Prizes?

Yes, cash prizes for each of the six flights for low gross and multiple net skins, and closest to the pin on par threes. The Brady Cup, our season-long points tournament rewards participation in events, prizes won, and sponsoring new members.

A League Tournament?

Yes, during mid-August, a two-day, two-man best-ball team event is held at Swan Lake Resort. Each team plays five nine-hole matches over the two days. Flight winners play in a Shoot-Out to determine the Championship.

“League Rules”?

With cash prize tournaments, our rule is that there are no “gimmes” and the ball is played down. Other rules: OB/Lost Ball situations are played as a lateral hazard; drop within two club lengths and take a 1-stroke penalty. Pick up after double par. Each event will have announced rules such as lift/clean/place if the weather/course requires. GPS Distance Measuring devices are allowed for all tournaments

Membership costs?

MSGA uses the Bluegolf online application and reservation process paid via credit card. Renewing members pay $75 annual dues. For 2026, new members also pay only the annual dues. If members need an official handicap, there is a $40 fee (or waived if maintained through your course). Members can play as many or as few events as they choose.

Note: As some courses require a “final headcount” in advance and charge for those players on the list, if you haven’t canceled within 48 hours and don’t play, you will be charged the full fee. Event fees are charged to your credit card two days prior to the day of the tournament.
